Before departure

Field questions before departure

The most useful answers concern access, timing and conduct. A species list comes after those foundations.

Can a rare-bird sighting be guaranteed?

No. Plan around suitable habitat and seasonal likelihood, not a promise. Weather, breeding activity and ordinary variation affect encounters.

When should I travel for migration?

Choose the island first. Northern spring and autumn are useful starting points for many Atlantic migrants, but timing and wind effects differ by species and place.

Do I need a local guide?

Some protected sites require one. Elsewhere a knowledgeable local guide can clarify access, sensitive habitats and safe routes. Confirm requirements directly.

What if the crossing or landing is canceled?

Use a buffer day or a land-based alternative. Check refund terms, accommodation flexibility and insurance before booking. Never pressure a crew to land.

How close can I approach a bird?

Follow current site rules and retreat farther if the bird changes its behavior. Keep feeding areas, nests and routes between colony and sea clear.

Is playback appropriate?

Avoid it around rare, breeding or stressed birds and wherever prohibited. Quiet observation is the default; a guide's presence is not permission to disturb wildlife.

What does island biosecurity involve?

Remove soil, seeds and organic material from footwear, clothing and equipment. Follow local inspection and disinfection procedures before and between landings.

What equipment matters most?

Reliable binoculars, weather protection, safe footwear, dry storage and essential medication usually matter more than a long lens. Ask operators about baggage and landing limits.

Should I publish exact rare-bird locations?

Not when doing so could expose a nest, vulnerable bird or restricted habitat. Follow local reporting protocols and share sensitive information with the relevant conservation body.
